When the Black family bought a five hundred year old house in the rural village of Rearsby in Leicestershire, there was a lot of work to do! Originally a farmer's property complete with cow barn and dovecote at the back, Blackstone set about transforming the place into a modern home.
Following the purchase of the property from the previous owners who had lived there since 1962, work commenced to open out the cottage to make more of the space. Blackstone gutted the whole property, rewired it throughout, and insulated the floors, ceiling and walls. All the original oak beams were sandblasted and new heating was installed including underfloor heating in the kitchen.
The removal of the chimney breast which took up half of the original kitchen and landing area, made space for a family bathroom on the first floor as well as a very spacious kitchen. All internal doors were replaced with oak doors and new windows were crafted in keeping with the original style of the property.
The total overhaul of the Black's home took just four months and the family moved in in November 2007.
When commenting on the family project, Garry Black said, ÒI am really pleased with what we have accomplished in a short time. Not one for a rest, I would now like to tackle the next part of the project which is to convert the old cow sheds into an extra lounge and playroom. It has been hard work, but well worth it.Ó
The conversion of the cow sheds is now complete bringing the project to a very satisfactory conclusion.
